There is a seller on e- bay selling 8, 2 way truss rods for abt. $45 . has anyone bought any of these ? are they any good ? the seller purestore has a lot of luthier related items . I see truss rods on CF martin for abt 12.65 think LMI is higher . Your opinion?

I would stick with a supplier that I know will stand by their product. Cheaper is not always better. I have used LMII 2-ways and the Martin one way. No problem with either

$12 isn't a lot for a truss rod. Just put the difference on the price of the Guitar. I doubt that $6 is going to be a deal breaker when it comes to a handmade Guitar.

I think this says so much for the little amount of money saved...!

As one who had to replace a broken two way rod on a brand new guitar just back from finish (Chinese made for an American outlet) I recommend going with a device with a known track record. I use Mark Blanchard's rod now but the Martin should be fine too.

I've used the 18 long two way rods from Allparts in my electrics for years. They're well made, very responsive, and I haven't had a failure yet. They're six bucks each dealer cost, about the same price as the ones you're looking at.

I suspect they're Chinese made, and I don't have a problem with them.

For my acoustics I use the Martin 2 ways.

If they made longer ones for electrics, I'd pay the extra six bucks and use them for the electrics as well.

I don't see the sense in paying 4 times as much for the electric rods from LMI, especially since I like the larger hex key adjustment in the Allparts rods and they seem just as high quality as the LMI rods.

I.ve done business with allparts before .But since I don/t build electrics. or know how to . Will probably get mine from Martin. Thanks for the info.

I've had to replace one of the Allied two way rods on one of my acoustics. It was difficult and required removing the fretboard. For the Martin two way rod, I make the slot for it with a round bottom bit. It's possible to remove this rod without disassembling the neck but you won't have to. It would be difficult to use the Martin rod for a peghead adjustment access. It is designed for soundhole access.

Thanks fillipo just had a quick look , he certainly has a huge variety of sizes . Price seems reasonable too.

Just as a precaution Filippo, rout a channel in a piece of wood and clamp another piece over it with the truss rod in place and lean into the adjustment both ways to test the welds.

When I had a two way marketed by a well known supplier break in a new instrument at one of the welds I tested the rest of my supply that way and 4 out of 7 failed. I just used to test them by clamping one end in a vise and taking it both ways with some tension. That isn't good enough to be sure the welds are solid.

Terence good idea, did you reweld the failures? or just send them back ? Are you allowed to divulge the name of that particular supplier, or have you changed your supplier ?? thanks

I sent them back. This was a while back. The supplier told be they had a bad batch and changed vendors in China. I assume the problem was fixed. I was not testing them aggressively enough either.

I think this thread will answer a lot of your questions. Note that all Martin-style rods don't appear to be the same.

Truss rods are not a place to pinch pennies. Failure results in a real mess that eats time and $$$$. I only use Mark Blanchard's hand made rods now. Well worth the expense.
